Aussies to get Telstra T-Hub tablet – a “fourth screen” device for the home

Telstra T-Hub tablet - a fourth screen device

Telstra, which is kind of like the Australian version of Verizon, is introducing a “fourth screen” device called the T-Hub tablet. What’s a fourth screen device, you ask? Well it’s not your TV, your PC or your mobile phone. It’s a burgeoning category for any supplemental media device made for your home — like the M-Tube MID tablet.

The Telstra T-Hub is a 7 inch touchscreen tablet that will tap into Telstra’s existing service and offer VOIP-like voice ability through its companion wireless handset. Using the T-Hub service, the tablet would be connected to hi-speed broadband and could access the internet and play web video. We would guess that the tablet would be able to stream content through a wireless network to other devices like the M-Tube and Samsung Couple, but no other details have been released by Telstra.

The T-Hub tablet will be able to play Youtube videos, access social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, play internet radio, have an address book and calendar and can be used as a digital photo frame when not in use. It all sounds good in theory… until you hear some of the comments from those in Australia. Evidently Telstra doesn’t have a very high confidence rating with there user base.

  1. I purchased a Telstra T-Hub on 21 April 2010. It arrived Friday 23 April 2010. The Order Reference is 704458.

After unpacking, I followed the installation wizard to setup the unit.

AT Stage 3, it attempts to do a software update. After a very slow download, it reports the software download failed; “Try Again” or “Exit Installation”.

Exiting Installation is not a good idea – the unit is not fully functional. Try again often results in a lock up (only 10 seconds according to the prompt – it lies) while it attempts to restart, which it will do after a few minutes.

Again, the next result varies, but the end result is always the same – no software update.

I rang Telstra and was finally put through to the section that handles T-Hub problems.

I was told that this is a known problem and reporting the issue would not result in solution.

The consultant suggested I try various combinations of trying to update the software – all of which have not been successful. I could return the unit, but that would be a turnaround of 2 weeks with no guarantee of success.

If I continued to try and get the update, eventually it is usually successful – “try again in the evening when there is led internet traffic”

I do not think that this attitude is very good. I have been supplied a product with known problems and no guarantee of success. Telstra has admitted it has no solution for the problem. Telstra does not want to do anything about the problem. “Ring back if you don’t have any success”.

  2. I have just spend 6 hours trying to have the same problem resolved (T-Hub software update failure) : about to take back the unit which I only purchased yesterday !

A great idea in concept, pity it fails in execution.

  3. Am having exactly the same problem, grrr. Am very frustrated.

  4. Got my T Hub yesterday and loaded it up, froze and would not install updates, ended up leaving it for an hour and gave it another shot and it loaded this time. Issue log for today-

drops out and or freezes- shut down restart fixes it.

Tested the Wi-Fi connection and getting a 90% signal strength so got me wondering

  5. This is my second try at the damn device.

First one wouldn’t even get past the instalation, just got stuck after the update stage. All it said was initalizing device, this went on indefinetly.

Second one worked fine up untill today when it started freezing. I can’t do anything on it because as soon as it turns on it freezes, I take out the battery turn it on and guess what it’s frozen.

I called telstra to ask about the issue and they said they know all about it. Lots of people have the freezing problems some not so bad but heaps of reports of this problem.
They will be bringing a software update for this on the 17/8 which they think will fix the issue.

For anyone out there thinking of getting one of these first series duds. stop and wait for a better one.

  6. Yes they did bring out a software update on the 17th. I keep getting alerts to tell me to upgrade to after about 30 attempts and fails i find it absolutely ridiculous that Telstra have a product like this. Frozen touchpad, upgrades that wont download and this on top of the weeks of incompetence that i experienced just changing account names with them and trying to organise my ADSL and T-hub. About 30 phone calls and much frustration, how the hell do Telstra expect to keep customers

  7. DAVE hi

im running elite cable and had no trubble in stalling it i think think this unite has to have a very good internet connection. and the unite must be kept close to gather close to your router or modem. the hand set dose not matter if it is in another room but don’t forget to synchronise it. (conrol panel, settings, synchronise, cordless handset, synchronise now)this send all you stored information to your hand set.good luck.
