The Ambiance Technologies Digitbook ADB-106 eReader offers nothing new or surprising

Earlier this week we discussed our upcoming predictions for eReaders in 2010. Among them is our heartfelt belief that traditional E-Ink eReaders will be a thing of the past come this time next year. Sure, they may still make them, but none will experience any consumer love unless they’re placed under a $100 price point.

Of course not everyone shares our keen insight and pleasant bodily aroma, so there will be more and more E-Ink eReaders popping up from now until the Saturn Moon Coalition invades Earth in 2014. Today’s example is from Ambiance Technologies — a Netherlands-based company — who is releasing the Digibook ADB-106 to the U.K. market for £229.99 ($383 U.S.). We have to give Ambiance Technologies props for not capitalizing the “b” in Digibook. It showed an amazing amount of self-restraint not present in most eReader companies.

The Digibook ADB-106 has a 6-inch 600 x 800 resolution E-Ink display with 16 shades of gray (nearly identical to the Kindle) and runs off a Samsung ARM 9 Core processor using Linux 2.6. It has 64MB of RAM, a 900mAh battery, USB port, expandable SD Card slot and plays MP3s. It features support for a diversity of eBook formats: TXT, PDF, ePub, RTF, PDB, TCR, PRC, MOBI, OEB, HTM, HTML, FB2, OPF, CHM, DJVU, IW4, DJV and IW44 (and I swear I only made the last half of those up). It also features language support for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian and Russian (sounds like the perfect Christmas gift for Solidad O’Brien’s extended family).

Intriguing is that it shows a WiFi icon on the screenshot, although no wireless connectivity is listed in the specs. That could go a long way in justifying it’s rather high price tag. Still, there’s nothing surprising or new that the Digibook ADB-106 has to offer.
