Fraud Alert: It looks like Smit knows nothing about selling units to Enso for their rebranded zenPad MID. Stay far, far away from this company and this product. If you’ve been unlucky enough to buy it, contact them for refunds immediately. Read more on it here from Engadget.
—–
Here’s another firm contender in the small tablet market. The Enso zenPad comes in with a 5-inch 800 x 480 resolution touchscreen powered by a Samsung 6410 667MHz processor. It also starts at an affordable $155 and is currently shipping.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of the Enso zenPad, but it has had a name change since then. We first saw the OEM of the zenPad on video under the name Smit MID-560 back at the IFA 2009 show thanks to Charbax from ARMDevices. It seems to have been rebranded as the Enso zenPad and brought to the States where it is currently available for sale.

The rest of the spec sheet features a six hour batery life, Android 1.6, 8GB of storage with expandable microSD, WiFi and optional GPS ($25 more) and 3G ($35 more). This MID has video, image and music playback along with an eBook reader. It certainly a more affordable version of a small tablet than an Archos 5 or Dell Streak. Still, it looks to be noticeably slower than both from the video below.

Nearly everyone has heard of a mobile internet device, or MID, but how many have heard of a mobile mobile internet device, or MMID? Probably none of you, because MMID is a term we just made up.

The Witspad W8 Maemo looks to introduce that category though by coupling MID features with a mobile phone. The W8 Maemo allows you to make calls. Although there’s no SMS function currently, it does come with a 4.3-inch touchscreen and is powered by a Marvell PXA 320 806MHz processor. Also a bit out of the norm is the OS the W8 runs, which is Maemo (like the Nokia N900) instead of WinCE or Android like we usually see with these devices. Other specs include 128MB of RAM, 256MB flash storage, 3.2MP camera, GPS, WiFi, 3G and a headphone jack. It can run a variety of video codecs and is capable of displaying H.264 at 30 fps.

The style of the Witspad W8 Maemo reminds us of Palm Pre (or a buttonless Gameboy Advance) with its rounded edges. The screen makes up 80% of the surface real estate and it is 3/4 of an inch thick. The China-based product will be sold for 3,200 yuan (around $470) but there’s no word on release date.

That’s all the information we have on it at this time, but typically products like this are released about 2-3 months after these types of specs are released. We can’t speculate on exact price, but it should be reasonable.

While not our favorite spice (that would be Ginger), Forsa is bringing quite a few features to the table with the Posh Pad version MV7.

The Forsa Posh Pad has a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution touchscreen powered by a low-energy Marvell PXA303 processor, 256MB of RAM and 2GB flash drive. It has built-in GPS, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth and a SIM port for 3G. The integrated webcam is front-facing and 1.3MP. There’s also an expandable microSD card slot, mini USB, USB 2.0, mic, speakers, headphone jack and stylus. The 2800mAh battery is rated for four or more hours (although the rep in the video gives it a larger, if more unrealistic, 8 to 12 hour range). It’s available now (though that’s probably for wholesale only) and Forsa says it will cost around $250.

After reporting on the slightly more spec weak G-Link 7006, we have to wonder how many more Marvell running Android MIDs will be coming to the market shortly.

MAG Digital is showing off their new 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution resistive touchscreen MDT70CT tablet at CeBIT. The MID features a Windows CE OS but due to the custom interface built by MAG Digital (called Talentech) it looks very much like an Android user interface.

The MDT70CT uses a Telechips CPU and is good for 1080p video playback and streaming through the included HDMI. It also has full-fledged GPS navigation. It seems that companies are identifying the GPS/MID coupling as a new trend. We reported on the Mio Moov V780 just a few days ago that has a similar concept, although it seems to place more emphasis on the GPS part of the equation.

The MAG Digital MID also has two mini USB ports, external speaker, included stylus, microSD card slot in addition to the aforementioned HDMI. Going by the video, shot by Charbax of ARMDevices.net, the tablet has a full compliment of typical MID features (video and audio playback, image viewing, internet surfing) plus Office documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), email and instant messaging. On the down side the battery is rated for a rather low two hours of portable run time. The representative says that a webcam will be included before launch, which is expected to be in April. The cost for the device will be between 200 and 250 — though we’re not sure if that’s $ or €.

Have you been looking for a comically large iPhone for your Mime Steve Jobs routine? Then the day is yours. The Shenzhen TESO is exactly what you need.

We guess it could also double as a tablet PC since it runs Windows 7 and an Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor. The 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 resolution screen is also capacitive touch (in keeping with the theme). Rounding out the spec sheet is 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 3G, 4-in-1 card reader, WiFi b/g, three USB 2.0 ports, VGA, optional GPS, accelerometer, 320GB HD and 3000mAh LION battery. It measures 11.4 x 5.9 x 0.79 inches and weighs 2.65 lbs. (great for superior arm strength).

Actually, that doesn’t sound like a half-bad tablet. We’ll be interested to see how the eventual price compares with the cloned source.

The Mio Moov V780 calls itself a navigation device, but it looks to be more of a MID with navigation features. Not only does it perform its namesake task (using Mio Spirit), it also brings 720p HD playback, streaming HD through an HDMI, digital TV support, web browsing, email, YouTube, image viewer and music player to the table. Recently it won an iF Product Design Award for 2010.

The Moov V780 has a 7-inch TFT LCD 800 x 480 resolution capacitive touchscreen, 600 MHz CPU, 512MB of memory and 4GB of internal storage with MicroSD card expansion. Some specs that won’t excite to many would be the Windows CE 6.0 operating system and Internet Explorer 6 (yes, the one that finally is being phased out). The Moov V780 supports H.264, H.263, DivX, WM9, VC1, MOV and MPEG4 video; MP3, WMV, WMA and ACC audio; and JPEG, PNG and GIF photos. Available ports are a mini USB 2.0, 3.5mm headphone, microphone and external TV antenna input.

Connection wise it features a WiFi 802.11 b/g and optional 3.5G and WiMAX. The Moov uses a 2300mAh rechargeable polymer battery but there’s no word on how much time that gives you. The V780 measures 8 x 4.37 x 0.565 inches and weighs just under a pound at 15.7 oz. Mio uses the 3D buzzword to describe its interface but we’re not sure quite what that means without seeing it in action. We should see examples of it soon as Mio will be exhibiting the Moov V780 at CeBIT starting next Thursday.

Update: Here’s a hands-on video by JKK from JKKMobile demonstrating the Moov V780. According to Mio, price should be between €400 to €599 ($545 to $815).

Also of mention are the mass list of accessories to be sold with the Moov V780, most notably the carry case with tablet mount and included QWERTY keyboard, desk stand, windshield mount and backseat holder. No word on price or when it may debut, but we should find that out in a few days.

Digitalrise has put out a few tablet PCs in the last few months. If you don’t recall the name there’s probably a reason for that. The last time they were mentioned on Best Tablet Review it was due to their “embarrassingly underpowered” PC-729 tablet PC.

Now Digitalrise has issued two new tablet PCs, both running Windows 7 and an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU, the S1 and X9. These tablet are identical save three elements: the single/multi-touch input, memory and the price. The S1 features single-touch input, 1GB of RAM and is listed for $659.99. The X9 has multi-touch input, 2GB of RAM and costs $789.99.

Both feature a 10.2-inch 1024 x 600 resolution touchscreen, 160GB SATA HDD, a Li-Ion 3000mAh battery (rated for around 4 hours of use), 1.3MP webcam, 3 USB 2.0 ports, a 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MS/MMC/MS-Pro), SVGA, audio in/out and network connector. They also come with WiFi a/b/g and a GPS/Bluetooth dongle. So the real question is (if you’re even interested in the tablets themselves): is $130 worth it for multi-touch and 1GB or RAM?

The S1 is currently on sale while the X9’s sale date has been delayed until March 3rd.

Each device has nearly the same specs, uses the same type of processor and contains too little memory and storage. We’ve become disillusioned to the point that when we see a new MID pop up we sometimes roll our eyes and look for something more worthy of reporting on that day (which would explain the relative lateness of us reporting on this product). Thankfully we went back and looked at the Shenzhen HT560 MID again because it’s packing some surprises.

To start, Shenzhen’s new HT560 MID uses a VIA 1GHz C7 processor and contains 1GB of memory and expandable storage between 8GB to 32GB. It has WiFi b/g and optional Bluetooth and GPS upgrades. There is a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel webcam in the top corner (which might mean the possibility of video calls via internet). It uses a 5.6-inch 800 x 480 WVGA touchscreen, has 2 USB 2.0 ports, VGA out, SD slot, external stereo speakers, an audio in/out and an ethernet port. The HT560 uses a 4800mAh battery which, while there’s no time rating per charge, should deliver a much higher playtime than most MIDs. Finally, the MID measures 5.9 x 3.7 x 0.9 and weighs 14.5 ounces with battery.

While it does run Windows XP — which is getting to be a rarity these days — we don’t see much of a problem with that. Most people who would buy this MID would be familiar with modding or switching OS’s and with the considerable (for a MID of this size) processor, full gig of RAM and decent SSD sizes (8, 16 and 32) with expandable SD storage option, it seems like a modder’s dream.

The HT560 is only available in wholesale quantities for right now, but there’s no word on price. It should be great eBay bait within a few weeks.

Coming out in China soon, the Adesun AD-708 tablet (link translated into English) uses a VIA C7 platform and has an 800×600 WVGA touchscreen LCD with built-in gravity sensor (to automatically switch between portrait and landscape modes). Adesun is offering two different options with their AD-708. All tablets will share the VIA C7 platform, VIA VX700 graphics card, 7 inch touchscreen LCD, have two USB 2.0, an express card slot, VGA out, SD card slot, a built-in LAN, Wireless b/g and a Bluetooth 2.0 module.

The basic Adesun AD-708 model features a C7M 1.2GHz processor with 512MB of RAM, an 8GB SSD drive and runs Windows XP for 1,999 yuan (just under $295 U.S.). The delux Adesun AD-708 model has double the memory, storage space and battery life (1GB, 16GB and 6400mAh respectively). It uses the same processor, comes with Windows XP and costs 2,999 yuan (roughly $440 U.S.). In addition you get a tablet car kit, GPS, TV receiver and 2GB SD card.

Adesun offers a 32GB SSD storage option as well although no upgrade price is listed. It seems like a decent MID that could have a lot of upgrade potential (or OS hacking ability). We’ll wait and see if any good mods come out of it. Thanks to Cloned in China who reported it first.
